In Oregon, districts and schools aim for students to graduate career and college-ready, aligning with the state's academic content standards and exposing them to diverse materials and perspectives. Districts are required to have a planned K-12 instructional program with common curriculum goals and academic standards, following a regular instructional materials adoption schedule for core subject areas. These adoptions must adhere to Oregon statutes and administrative rules. The goal is to adopt a curriculum that is aligned with state standards, encourages student engagement, and supports educators in delivering effective and impactful instruction. The Astoria School District creates an adoption committee for each curriculum adoption that may include teachers, parents/guardians, administrators, and students.
Oregon Instructional Materials Adoption Schedule:
For the 2023-2024 school year, Science curriculum is up for review and adoption based on Oregon’s Instructional Materials Adoption Schedule. The Astoria School District will be postponing the adoption of science materials for grades K-5 until the 2024-2025 school year, as allowed by Oregon rules. See the Literacy Curriculum Adoption information on this page for further information.
The Astoria School District is considering several curriculum options for middle school and high school Science Curriculum. Below is review information for each curriculum being reviewed by the Science adoption committee, as well a form for you to provide feedback. There are also print materials available for review at the District Office during a specified review window to be released at a later date.

The state of Oregon has a new Early Literacy Success Initiative established in 2023. This initiative provides for school district grants to support the implementation of research-based reading and literacy curriculum and instruction. The literacy curriculum adopted by the Astoria School District in 2017 does not align with the new state early literacy initiative and, therefore, the district will be adopting a new literacy curriculum for grades K-5 for implementation in Fall of 2024. This will postpone the adoption of science materials for elementary grades for one year as staff implement the new literacy curriculum.
