Lower Columbia Virtual Charter Academy
Lower Columbia Virtual Charter Academy

The Astoria School District is launching the Lower Columbia Virtual Charter Academy (LCVCA) for the 2026-2027 school year. This K-8 virtual school is designed for students who thrive in a flexible, digital learning environment and offers a personalized distance education program in partnership with OpenEd.
The Academy serves two main goals: supporting local homeschooling families with district-verified resources and increasing state funding for the Astoria community by opening enrollment to K-8 students across Oregon.
The District is now seeking five community members to serve on the inaugural LCVCA Board of Directors. This board will oversee program quality and ensure the school remains in good standing with state regulations.
Staff and community members interested in shaping this innovative program can find the Board application and additional school details at the link below.
A Virtual Charter School Review Committee will screen applications and select the Lower Columbia Virtual Charter Academy, and the length of time a person will serve on the board.
Applications are due by April 24, 2026

The establishment of Lower Columbia Virtual Charter Academy serves two primary strategic purposes for our district:
- Supporting Local Families: We aim to provide a robust, district-sponsored platform for families currently homeschooling. This allows Astoria students to remain "connected" to our district community while maintaining the flexibility of home-based learning.
- Strategic Enrollment Growth: By attracting students from across the state, we can increase total district enrollment. This growth directly and positively impacts our state funding.
As the educational landscape evolves, many families are seeking alternatives to traditional classroom settings. By launching LCVA, the Astoria School District positions itself as a leader in flexible, digital education while ensuring our local students have access to high-quality, district-verified support.
